THE DAY OF VALOR
The Day of Valor, also known as Araw ng Kagitingan, commemorates the heroism of Filipino fighters during World War II. Every year on or around April 9th, it is commemorated in the Philippines. In the Philippines, Araw ng Kagitingan is a non-working holiday that falls on a long weekend. On this day, World War II veterans march in various cities throughout the Philippines. There are small parades in the Philippines, but the main highlight of the Araw ng Kagitingan is when the country's president delivers a speech at the Mt Samat shrine in Bataan province to honor the heroism of Filipino and American troops during World War II.
The Day of Valor, also known as Araw ng Kagitingan, honors the bravery of Filipinos and American soldiers during World War II when the Philippines was invaded by the Japanese.
The Day of Valor was a national holiday until November 26, 1980, when the Philippine government issued Letter of Instruction No. 1087, declaring “Araw ng Kagitingan” a national public holiday to commemorate those who helped restore democracy and independence to the Philippines during WWII. On June 30, 1987, Executive Order No. 203 was issued, designating April 9 as “Araw Ng Kagitingan” in honor of the heroes of Bataan, Corregidor, and Bessang.
